This hardly even qualifies as a project, but here's something I did recently. I kept having a problem with my 15" oval air filter. The engine has sucked out the fabric from a couple of the K&N filters, leaving only the mesh.
I replaced the 15" filter with the cobra 22" oval filter and the 2" element, but didn't really like the look of it. I found that K&N makes a 3" tall filter for that and wanted to use it. I cut out a square from the inside of the filter base and built sides out of sheet metal to drop the filter base by 1.5 inches. I had to move some other stuff around like the fuel pressure regulator, but it fits nicely.
I wanted to polish the stripes and COBRA text on the filter lid, but the ground finish was very coarse. I put the whole lid on the milling table and faced it off with a fly cutter, then polished it up with a polishing wheel. Powder coated it satin black and then laid some bright red enamel down in the COBRA text grooves. I think it turned out pretty nice.
I changed the valve covers to the same style as the air cleaner and put new Edelbrock fuel rails on too. I like them better.
