Megasquirt Fuel Injection System

(Old post copied over from the old forum)

Hey all,

Things have been more than a little slow on this forum lately, so I'll post what I've been working on over the winter. Some of you have been hearing me talk about this for the last year or so, but now it's actually done. I have retrofitted the carburetor with a built from scratch fuel injection system using the Megasquirt controller. This thing is awesome. It allows me to use a laptop and software to set ANY control parameter regarding the engine fuel.

If anyone's interested in looking into this, the website is:
http://www.msextra.com
I bought most of the kit parts from:
http://www.diyautotune.com
Configuration software from:
http://tunerstudio.com/index.php/tuner-studio
The intake, rails, and some other parts I bought from Ebay.

Right now, I just have the system controlling the fuel to the engine. Ignition is still controlled by the MSD electronic distributor and MSD6a CDI box. Later though, I plan to eliminate the distributor altogether and have the megasquirt controller handle the ignition electronically.

I just got the thing finished and fired up last weekend, March 8. Big thanks to Brian (Luce) for all of his advice and driving up from Houston to help me start it up for the first time.

Anyway, here are a few pics of the setup:

This is the megasquirt controller assembled and mounted to my behind the dash panel:

Here's the same unit wired into the car:

The surge tank installed in the trunk. (Also ran 3/8" stainless supply and return lines from here to the engine)

The fuel pumps. Low pressure pump fills the surge tank while high pressure supplies the fuel rails:

...and the assembly on the engine itself:

I've still got some tweaking to do with the parameters, but so far, the difference between this and a carb is night and day. The throttle response now is immediate. Starting the engine is so much easier, regardless of the outside temperature. No more need to let everything get up to temp for 15 minutes while I constantly play with the choke and gas pedal.

I will say that there's been a bit of a learning curve with regard to all of the sensors, and the injection theory, but it's totally worth the effort. Not only does car perform better, but I have a much better understanding of how it all works.
