Cobra Fans,
I’m considering buying an enclosed trailer to tow my Factory Five Roadster (Cobra)–My pressing need is near the end of this year I need to take the car to Indiana and back for Jeff Kleiner to do paint and body work-Jeff is well known in the Factory Five circles. Anyway, if I have to, I suppose I could rent one if I haven’t found the right one to buy.
I’ve been hauling the car on a 7x16’ utility trailer which is plenty long enough but pretty narrow to walk around. I could take the car up there open, but really don’t want to haul a freshly painted convertible back 1000 miles on an open trailer. Since I may tow my 2009 corvette, I don’t want to go any shorter than 16’. I pull my ranch trailers with a 2024 Chevy 2500HD with gooseneck and receiver hitches and a brake controller so the weight doesn’t concern me, however bigger than necessary costs convenience and fuel. I think 8-8.5 x 16, 18 or 20 tandem axle should work? I assume 3500 lb Gross Axle weights would be fine and brakes an optional nice to have.
Several of you had enclosed trailers in April at the Spring Meet in San Marcos and I’d like to ask some questions:
1) what size enclosed trailer do you have or have used? What do you consider minimum vs ideal?
Length?, Width?, Height?
2) what is the real difference between an enclosed cargo trailer and enclosed car hauler besides heavy floor tie downs, a re-enforced door ramp, and $5000?
3) Other features I should consider-Front side door?
4) Do any of you have one to sell or know a good source for used trailers?
5) Do you know of a good place to rent one?
